Teaching Philosophy

Thank you for considering me as your potential piano instructor! Cultivating a learning musician’s knowledge, skill, and passion is a gift to me. When you invest in music lessons, you invest in an art that will benefit the whole person, carry on a meaningful tradition, and enrich daily life.

I believe that my job is to facilitate a student’s best personal experience with music. I encourage students to be self-teachers as well as learners, because a student does his or her best learning when they feel confident to ask questions and curious to seek answers.

In my teaching, I take a holistic approach. This is summarized in my three goals in teaching:

Functional Musicianship

My first goal is to facilitate functional musicianship in students, which is to develop their competency. This includes piano technique, music theory, ear-training, musical interpretation and performance, and collaboration.

Appreciation of Music

My second goal is to foster an appreciation of the gift of music. I believe that appreciation should result when engaging this beautiful art. Further, I encourage students to share their gift of music with others through performing.

Real-Life Application of Skills

Through teaching music, I strive to aid in developing a student’s sense of self-confidence, enjoyment of work, discipline, and their ability to reach goals. As a student, he or she will be able use these valuable skills in many aspects of their lives.
